My Why for Homeschooling!

My Why for Homeschooling!

There are so many, beyond good, reasons to start homeschooling. But for now I want to delve deeper into my why.

Why is my why so important? Because it is what keeps me from giving up. No matter what is going on, no matter how tired I am, no matter how hard it is, my why is what keeps me going.

Even before my husband and I had kids we had decided we wanted to homeschool. Once we had our first, who was born with an anomaly in one of her chromosomes, it solidified it even more.

Having watched my brother who has down syndrome, go through school and seeing how the school informed my mom that after he reached a certain point in the education, they were going to have him repeat the same level over and over till he graduated. They didn't give him a chance to prove himself. My mom, who was a teacher before becoming a parent (she homeschooled the rest of us till we went to college), had been supplementing his schooling on the side and he was way beyond the level they were teaching him. My Husband and I decided the school system was not the place for our daughter.

We even talked to family members who were teachers and special ed teachers as well as friends who held those positions too. What we learned was not good.

It was the best choice we could have made for her. She has proven herself so many times and is smarter than anyone gives her credit for.

My dream is for my daughter to thrive not barely survive through a curriculum that is not specific for her so she can't learn in the unique way she can grasp and learn things.

I have found that through homeschooling, not only with my daughter but my other five children, that each child learns differently and needs to have the freedom to learn in their own unique way. With homeschooling I have the choice of what is being taught to my children and how. I can customize every part of their learning journey specifically to them. I don't have to try and understand what is being taught by a teacher and then struggle myself to explain and help my children through their homework. It has been absolutely and amazingly freeing and even our schedule in our control.

This is my why. They are my why.

Running on Empty?

How do you keep going with homeschooling? How do keep on when you have nothing left?

These are some of the questions I get asked often since I've been homeschooling for over 10 years. Before delving into some easy steps, I take to keep myself going, I want to address this first:

Homeschooling is a choice, as is loving someone. If you don't feed it and are running on fumes you will not be successful. Be sure you are pouring into yourself and taking breaks.

Here are some simple steps I have found that work for me. My hope in sharing these steps is that they will inspire other parents to find ways to help themselves and to set in place healthy ways to feed and pour into their life of homeschooling.

1.    What is my why? Why did I start homeschooling?

  •     Once I answer this question it lights a fire under me, and I start moving again. My why is so strong and so deep that it always helps me keep going.
  •      What is your why? Why are you homeschooling or wanting to homeschool?
2.    Who do I have on my side?

  •      Community: this one is HUGE!
  •    I have three close homeschooling mamas who are part of my journey. Obviously, they aren't the only ones who have encouraged me, God has brought in others at just the right moment to encourage and lift me up. But the three main ladies are the ones that are there day in and day out.
  •     One is a retired homeschooling mama who taught for over 30 years and is a wealth of information.
  •     One is at the same level of schooling with her kids as I am. (This is so helpful, so I know when certain subject struggles are not isolated to us) You are never alone in your journey. Just remember that.
  •     One is a retired public-school teacher who has been schooling who own children for the last few years. She is fresh and has such amazing and exciting ideas. She also teaches with such grace and understanding it helps me so much!
Each of these ladies are key and have helped me continue. We pour into each other and keep each other going. This, in itself, is an immeasurable gift.

3.    Last but certainly not least.

  •    Prayer.
I can't count how many times I have fallen on my knees before the cross giving it to Christ. Every time I take back the burden when I was never supposed to, and it gets too hard to stand I am reminded why I'm not in charge. He is in charge always and when I step out of line the burden becomes too heavy. So, prayer is my biggest and most valuable tool to help me keep going. It never fails. He never fails.

Here is is a pdf printout, Homeschool why & affirmations.pdf , with some affirmations for you and your kiddo/s and for you to write out your why. Be sure to hang it where you can see it every day.

Did You Know?

Low energy, always tired, no sexual drive, feeling low and emotionally off, difficulty remembering words and thinking clearly…….Do you find yourself dealing with these?

Did you know that many of these are tied to our endocrine system and hormone imbalance?Link Here

First you need to understand your own body. You are your body’s first line of defense. We are the gate keepers to what goes in and on our body. We can be so busy with life that we forget to take care of ourselves. And how can we as business women, moms, grandmothers, wives, etc. be there for others when we cannot seem to function properly?

Did you know that many of the products and foods we use and eat have a significant effect on the balance of our body? There are hormones added to animals that we eat to speed their growth for faster production of meat for consumers. Link Here

These added hormones are in our food, which means that we eat them. If we are adding hormones to our bodies, then we are causing imbalance unknowingly.

Also products we use on our bodies include synthetic chemicals that can disrupt the communication that the hormones from our endocrine system carry throughout our body. This can also cause imbalance.

The daily use and intake of the products and food compound the effects they have, until our body can not keep up with filtering out the excessive amount we are taking in. This leads to negative reactions in our bodies and the signs mentioned above. We need to begin to listen to the signs our body gives before it starts screaming and we end up with a serious issue.

You can take the first step by changing what you put in and on your body to help support the balance and function of your body.

Beauty of Homeschooling

Take a breath..... No, a deeper one..............

That was better! Now we can continue.

Have you noticed that the simplest of things can have the most complex explanations?

For example: "Mama, where does rain come from?", "Mama, how does rain turn to snow?", "Mama, where do babies come from..." Ahem!!! TOO SOON! Moving on.....

The beauty of homeschooling comes from the ability to take those questions and explore the answers together. It creates an excitement in the hearts of little ones in being able to have a say to add in things that they are interested in learning and gives them the desire to learn more!

Yesterday we left the worksheets, reading, and chores to go in search of snow. In Phoenix we get snow very rarely and it doesn't last long. So we left our normal routine and spur the moment decided to go in search of some snow as we had had some strong storms. Shaking up the routine for a wonderful experience that they can feel and touch to get questions answered can be the perfect way to teach. Now we can learn more about weather and how the seasons and temperature effects the precipitation. Yay for hands on science!

Homeschooling is all about giving them a firm foundation to build on and using that to help them explore and learn new things in the way that they learn best. Each lesson is tailored to them and they get one on one time with their parent. And sometimes that time includes some snow ball fights!

Active learning is one of the best tools in your toolbox, so don't let it sit there gathering dust!

Now go out there and explore with your little explorer!

Life Lesson From Food

I had noticed last night that a strawberry in the bottom of the carton was really molding, so I decided to use them for breakfast today.

As I opened the carton today to pull out all the other strawberries so they did not mold.... I was surprised that the mold had already spread to most of the bottom strawberries and a few on top. I had not been able to see that on the outside.

I felt like I was looking at my heart and how life can throw us into situations and it is my choice to allow my hurt and woundedness to turn into negative emotions of anger, hate, bitterness, jealousy, selfishness, self pity, worthlessness, fear, hard heartedness, guilt, shame, etc.

Once I allow those negative emotions take root, they do not just effect one part of my life..... but it grows and begins effect every area of my life.... even though it may not be visible initially, just like those strawberries. And if I don't remove that bad root it will infect every part of my life.

It is like the scriptures that say.

"It's not what goes into your body that defiles you;  you are defiled by what comes from your heart." Mark 7:15

"Above all else, guard your heart,
for everything you do flows from it." - Proverbs 4:23

"A good man brings good things out of the good stored up
in his heart, and an evil man brings evil things out of the evil
stored up in his heart. For the mouth speaks what the heart is full of." - Luke 6:45

If we have the heart of Christ our response to everything will be loving. Our challenge in life is to go through difficulties and storms and to still have the heart of Christ. So how we respond to our situations in life create the way we will respond to others. It is our choice to respond to life through negativity or love. To allow what grows inside our hearts to products life or death. And in that way we can decide to allow ourselves to be defiled from what comes out of our hearts or to allow the Holy Spirit to pour love and life out of our hearts because it is not ours, it is the Lord's to use.

We have the choice to surrender our lives and allow God to heal all the hurts and wounds so that he can use us to be there for others and to bring His love and life wherever we go.

See the strawberries I cleaned up? They have some parts removed because the bad had to be cut out so that the rest could be saved. Sometimes we feel broken and only part of what we were. But God cleanse us up and fills in all those broken parts so we are whole again and can testify to who He is and pour out his love to others.

Such a beautiful picture from strawberries! I didn't get my quiet devotion time today, so God used strawberries to talk to me. He is so faithful!
